Photos & Camera: Capture, Organize, Share

Taking a Good Photo

Your phone camera is more capable than many dedicated cameras from just a few years ago. Here are the basics:

  1. Open the Camera app. On most phones, you can also swipe left on the lock screen to open the camera quickly.
  2. Hold your phone with both hands for stability. Tuck your elbows against your body.
  3. Make sure the subject is well-lit. Natural light (near a window, outside) gives the best results. Avoid having a bright light or window behind the subject.
  4. Tap the screen where you want the camera to focus. A yellow square (iPhone) or blue circle (Android) will appear.
  5. Tap the white shutter button to take the photo. Try not to move while tapping.

Finding Your Photos

Every photo you take is saved automatically in your Photos app (iPhone) or Google Photos / Gallery app (Android). Open the app and you will see all your photos arranged by date, newest first.

Zooming In and Out on Photos

When viewing a photo, use two fingers on the screen:

This is called a "pinch to zoom" gesture and works in almost any app.

Deleting Photos You Do Not Want

  1. Open the photo.
  2. Tap the trash can icon (usually at the bottom right).
  3. Confirm by tapping Delete Photo or Move to Trash.

Important: Deleted photos go to a "Recently Deleted" folder and stay there for 30 days before being permanently removed. If you delete something by accident, you can recover it from that folder.

Sharing Photos with Family and Friends

Method 1: Through WhatsApp or text message

  1. Open the photo in your Photos app.
  2. Tap the share icon (a box with an arrow on iPhone, or three connected dots on Android).
  3. Choose WhatsApp, Messages, or Email from the list.
  4. Select the person and send.

Method 2: AirDrop (iPhone to iPhone only)

  1. Open the photo and tap the share icon.
  2. If the other person\'s iPhone is nearby with AirDrop on, their name will appear at the top.
  3. Tap their name to send.

Freeing Up Storage Space

Photos and videos take up the most space on your phone. Here are ways to manage this:

Back up to the cloud:

Once backed up, the cloud keeps a full copy of every photo. Your phone can store smaller versions to save space.

Delete old videos: Videos take up much more space than photos. Check your videos and delete ones you no longer need.

Taking a Screenshot

A screenshot captures exactly what is on your screen. Very useful for saving a recipe, a map, or directions.

Screenshots are saved in your Photos app, often in a separate "Screenshots" folder.

Sending a Photo by Email

  1. Open the photo.
  2. Tap the share icon.
  3. Choose Mail (iPhone) or Gmail (Android).
  4. A new email will open with the photo attached. Type the address and send.

Tip: If someone asks you to send a photo "in high quality," email or AirDrop preserves the original quality better than WhatsApp, which compresses images.
