An app store is the place on your phone where you get new apps. Think of it like a shop, but most things are free. iPhones use the App Store (a blue icon with a white "A"). Android phones use the Google Play Store (a colorful triangle icon). These are already on your phone. You do not need to download them.
Most popular apps are free. The download button will clearly say Free, Get, or Install. If an app costs money, you will see a price (like $2.99) instead. You will never be charged without seeing the price first and confirming the purchase. So you can browse safely without worrying about accidental charges.

When you search for an app, several results may appear with similar names. Here is how to pick the real one:
After installing an app, it may ask for permissions like access to your camera, microphone, contacts, or location. This is normal for many apps:
The rule of thumb: Does this permission match what the app does? If yes, tap Allow. If it seems unrelated, tap Don\'t Allow or Deny. You can always change these permissions later in your phone\'s Settings.
After downloading, tap Open in the store, or find the new icon on your home screen. Many apps will walk you through a short setup when you open them for the first time.
Tip: If someone told you to download a specific app, ask them to send you a link by text message. Tapping that link will take you directly to the correct app in your store.
